Choosing My Career Path from a Menu of Options

My career path has been neither direct nor meticulously planned. As a graduate student at Vanderbilt, I would not have imagined myself participating in and leading toxicological studies as an FDA research fellow. Prior to finishing my doctoral thesis research, I was completely open to “alternative” career paths that would allow me to apply the transferable skills I acquired and honed during my graduate training. In addition, I wanted to utilize these skills in ways that extended beyond basic research. Although basic research plays a vital role in advancing medicine, I desired a career that would allow me to broaden my scientific knowledge while also making more significant contributions to the public good.
