Lessons in Entrepreneurship: Never stop learning

In my last post, I told you to buy the experience you need by hiring experts. In this post, I’m going to tell you, even if you have the experts, you still need to know the basics. What does this mean? As scientists, we are not trained in business. We don’t think about the daily operations of a business. If we were lucky, or perhaps unlucky as I am finding out, in graduate school and in our postdoc, we didn’t have to think about how our laboratory was run (this would have helped to prepare us for the realities of business). We kept our nose to the grindstone, and we worked on our projects. If we lifted our heads from the lab bench for long enough to breath, maybe we would have noticed that business was going on around us, and we might have learned something. But we didn’t.
